Who pays for Hospice?

Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits and most private insurance policies when certain requirements are met. 

Requirements:

1. Two doctors, often your doctor and the hospice doctor, agree that the patient has 6 months or less to live should the illness run its natural course.

2. The patient chooses hospice care instead of treatments with curative intent and signs a statement to this effect.

3. The hospice program the patient chooses is Medicare-approved.
